I like to write poetry in my free time. The challenge of rhyme, meter, euphony, wit, and reason all combine to make the poetic process so enjoyable. And to me, that's what poetry should be first: enjoyable, both for the poet and the audience. Some of my poems may be hard to understand at first, but I hope you at least enjoy reading or hearing it. Perhaps the words just sound nice to you. Perhaps a phrase provokes a wild and beautiful image in your mind. Perhaps, with delightful surprise, a poem articulates what you have not quite been able to put into words. But having simply enjoyed it, I hope you will also understand it. Understanding a poem and seeing the layers of meaning within the words is definitely a part of the enjoyment.
